Part 6
Once Toni and Fangs left, Y/N forced Sweet Pea to lay down on the couch She quickly got him a glass of water and heat up some food, that he consumed quickly and happily. Then, she fetched her 1st aid kit and some ice. She had patched up her dad so many times before she had become quite the talented nurse.
Y/N started on his face, cleaning each cut one by one carefully. She always let her fingers linger on his skin delicately, somehow trying to transmit some confidence and safety onto the broken figure that stood before her. Sweet Pea was trying to act tough, gritting his teeth not to curse and keeping his eyes closed, but she knew he had to be in immensurable pain. Reaching for his closed fist, she took his hand and unwrapped his fingers, then wrapping them around her arm.
“You don’t have to pretend it doesn’t hurt, Sweets. I know it does” – he opened his eyes, feeling the warmth of her arm around his fingers, and squeezed lightly. His eyes were sad and deeply hurt, as he avoided her stare. She pressed the cotton pad onto another cut and his hand immediately closed strongly around her arm. Y/N responded with a small sweet smile, reassuring him that it would all be over soon.
“Are you okay?” – he asked, his words breaking the harmonious silence that had installed itself in the darkened and dusty living room.
“You’re asking ME if I’m okay? You’re the one bleeding onto my couch and needing stitches in approximately 100% of your body. I should be asking you that.” – She answered sadly, holding his chin to examine his bruised jaw. His eyes found hers and locked them in place, staring so intensely that she simply couldn’t look away, as her cheeks reddened from the attention.
“I’m used to this, Y/N. I get in fights all the time. I’m worried about you. You’re the one who had her entire world flipped upside down today.”
“Apparently it is my fault, though” – she bitterly added, remembering the previous happenings at the Serpents headquarters. – she moved to patch a nasty cut on his neck, as he tilted his head to give her access. Leaning forward to steady his head with her other arm, as her dominant hand moved over the cut lightly, she was almost sitting on his lap. They were so close they could feel the heat of the other’s body radiating through their clothes and the open air.
“No. Fuck that, fuck all of them. Don’t listen to Flores, he’s been after your dad’s position for years. None of this was your fault.” – he assured her in a strong and kind whisper, still staring into her eyes. He moved his hand to stroke her face, the bruises she had gained the day before already turning purple-ish. In that moment, Sweet Pea wanted nothing more than to kiss her, to feel her pink plump slightly hurt lips on his shattered ones, and it took everything in him not to lean in in that very moment.
But he didn’t. Somehow, he knew it wasn’t the right time, and he wanted nothing less than to scare her away from him. He had promised her dad he would take care of her, and he would do anything to make sure he wouldn’t fail her, nor her dad. She was still looking at him, unaware of the thoughts going through his mind, as she focused on how guilty she felt over the recent events.
“But if I was a Serpent…”
“Everything would have been the same. They could have hurt you anyway, and we would hurt them back. And I’d take this beating over again a million times before I ever let them come near you again”
“Why?” – she whispered, so quietly he almost didn’t hear her. She had put the cotton pads down by now and was resting her palms on his shoulders, as the energy of the room felt ready to shift, as if all they needed was one small move and everything would be different. – “Why are you doing this for me?”
He looked at her, thinking of an answer, thinking of what the true answer would be but also what the answer he could give her should be. Finally, he reached his hands to hold her wrists, pulling her to him, and embraced her with his arms and body, planting a small kiss on her head.
“Don’t ask me that, not now, not yet. I’ll let you know when I know. I hope that’s okay…”
“Yeah” – she sighted in content, letting her body relax into his – “That’s okay, Sweets”.

Authors’ Note: Thank you so much for reading, liking and commenting the last few parts. It meant the world to me, it really did. I think this might be the last part from this exact story line - if I keep writing it will probably be after a huge time jump. I also realize now that the name of the story never got to make sense, but if this goes on hopefully it will in the future. Anyway, hope you enjoy!!

Part 9
Sweet Pea drove away as fast as he possible could, cursing his bike for not going faster and still allowing him to see her blurry broken figure in the review mirror. He didn’t quite understand why he had reacted like that, but deep down he knew it was the right thing to do. This would push her away from him, keeping her safe from him, but also keeping himself safe from her and all of the suffering she would eventually bring him in the long run. Because that’s all letting people in had ever brought him – suffering.
He only stopped in front of his trailer, practically throwing the bike onto the floor as he rushed inside his modest home. He punched everything he could on his way to his room, finally collapsing onto his bed. He closed his eyes, struggling to fight the urge to go to her house and apologise, to beg her to never look at him the way she had when he screamed at her again. Eventually, between the pain and anger, he fell asleep.
Y/N let herself cry out for as long as she felt necessary, but eventually forced herself to stop the self-pity party, rising to her feet and walking into the bathroom to have a shower. Once she had changed into an old pair of leggings and a sweater, she focused on homework and mandatory readings until her dad was home, and then moved to the kitchen to get started on dinner. They mostly ate in silence, after Y/N had assured her dad that her day had been great, but she was still tired from the night before. With that in mind, she excused herself back to her room as soon as she was done cleaning up, diving right back into homework again, eventually passing out on top of her desk out of exhaustion and sadness.
She got back to her senses somewhen in the middle of the night. Checking her phone, she realised it was somehow 4 in the morning. Looking outside, the street was dark except from the mystical glare shot by the moon. Y/N started to drag herself to bed, intending on sleeping through the rest of the night and probably also the following day, since it was Saturday, but she had barely even touched the bed before she changed her mind. She refused to go to sleep angry, before she had figured things out with Sweet Pea – life was too short to be fighting over petty things that she didn’t even understand. Getting her heavy boots and huge coat on, she tiptoed downstairs, closing the house door behind her in silence, and began the 15-minute walk to Sweet Pea’s trailer. The street was entirely quiet and empty, and once she managed to shake away the fear of being jumped by some ghoulie, she even managed to enjoy the peace of mind the hour allowed for.
She hadn’t thought through what she was doing, so once she reached his door she froze in place. What was she even going to say? What if he started screaming at her again? What if he had finally become sick of her and that was his way out of this friendship? Shaking her head in judgement of her own thoughts, she forced herself to knock, hugging her body as she waited for the door to open. Eventually, she heard steps on the other side of the door, before it was furiously pulled back in front of her, a sleepy pissed off looking Sweet Pea emerging behind her.
“WHO THE HELL…. Oh. Y/N. Hum… I… Fuck, didn’t see this coming. – he panicked, biting at his bottom lip. Y/N cocked her head to the side, staring at him blankly, uncapable of producing any sound whatsoever – “Are you ok? Is your dad alright? What’s going on?” – he nervously asked, stumbling over his own words.
“Can I come in? It’s cold outside and I forgot my gloves.” – she half whispered, staring at the floor. He tripped over his own feet as he rushed to get behind the door, allowing her to walk into his small home.
As she walked in, she tried her best not to look around too much, so she wouldn’t invade his privacy more than she already had. She stood in the middle of the room before turning to him, as he shut the door and leaned against it, staring at her.
“Y/N, I…”
“No. It’s my turn to speak now, Sweets. I think you’ve said enough” – he nodded, amazed that she would still use his nickname after the way he had treated her – “You were a total dick, you know? There is no possible reason for you to go off on me like that, out of nowhere. Even if you had your reasons, however strange to me they might be, you can’t just talk to people like that, and walk away while they cry in confusion. I was so angry at you I almost told my dad about it in hopes he’d punch you in the face. But It’s after 4 a.m now, and tomorrow is a new day, and I refuse to go to bed angry, or cursing someone out, especially someone who has stood for me like you have. People die every day Sweets, life sucks and the world is a super dark place, and we don’t have a lot of time on this earth, so we better not waste it fighting over stupid things none of us understand. So I’m here, and I’m begging you – tell me what’s wrong. No screaming, no shutting me out. Just tell me, whatever it is, I can handle it. Tell me you don’t want to be my friend anymore, tell me you never want to talk to me again. Whatever it is, just say it, and I’ll go. But I refuse to go to sleep before we figure this out”
Her voice had evolved to a whisper through the conversation, and Sweet Pea found himself taking steps in her direction to be able to hear her. By the end, she had silent tears running down her cheeks. He struggled to breathe as he watched her fall apart in front of him, and he was stunned by how mature she was being about the whole confrontation. He walked slowly to her, wiping the tears from her cheeks. She closed her eyes and let her face lean against his hands, sighting.
“I’m sorry. I’m a total douchebag. I was an absolute monster to you, I can’t.. Fuck. I don’t deserve you to talk to me like that. I don’t know what to say. I’m so sorry. I’m really sorry about screaming at you and making you cry and…”
“Stop apologising, I just want an explanation. I just want to understand what happened.” – she said, back to her normal voice. He sighted, gesturing towards the couch, moving the clothes that had accumulated there so she could sit down, and then sitting down next to her. He rubbed his hands together nervously, frenetically trying to map out what he was going to say to her. “Please, Sweets. Stop thinking so much about it, just be honest with me”.
“I got scared. I don’t know how much you know about my story, but it’s a sad one. A common one from this side of the tracks, but sad nonetheless. Dad got himself shot trying to steal drugs from some huge ass gang three towns over from here, my brother overdosed on our kitchen counter with my parents’ drugs and mom walked out on me after that, leaving me to fucking die alone or whatever when I was only 9. Been taking care of myself ever since, and of course the Serpents are everything to me and they’ve helped me so much, and your dad and FP especially, but I’m still alone, okay? I’m still the only fucking person I can count on, even though I love Toni and Fangs and everyone else. And you scared the shit out of me because you had an effect on me that no one had before, the way you pull me in into your atmosphere and make me want to stop everything and anything just to make sure you’re okay is infuriating, and I know it sounds straight up from a stupid Twilight movie but I just… Anger is my defence mechanism, and in that moment I was scared, so I turned to anger. That’s it. The whole truth. That’s it.” – Y/N stared at him in disbelief, her tears silently filling her face. Sweet Pea was staring at the floor, hands closed into tensed up fists, and he looked about to cry as well. His bottom lip was trembling, and Y/N wanted nothing more than to grab it between her own until he knew that everything was going to be okay. He looked up at her and she finally saw him for the first time, the real him that he hid behind the large confidant figure that he carried around every day.
She sat up closer to him and inserted her hand through one of his hands, holding it tight. He squeezed her hand back, sighting in relief.
“I know what you mean. I guess… I guess you’re too young to remember this, or even too young to know it, I don’t know how much FP or my dad talk about it. But there’s a reason I’m not a Southside Serpent, and that I never hung out with you guys until now or rode motorcycles. And it’s not just that it doesn’t look good on college applications. My mom was a Serpent too, dad and she met at southside high. They were pretty much Serpent Royalty, and I had been riding with them ever since I was old enough to walk. But when I was six, the three of us went for a picnic, and I was on my mom’s bike. We were just riding around, but some Ghoulies spotted us and recognized my parents, so they started chasing us by car. Mom and Dad sped away trying to escape, trying to keep me safe, but eventually, near Sweet Water River, mommy lost control of her bike and we were both projected forward. I made it out mostly okay, with just a few scars and bruises, but she didn’t. She died in my dad’s arms in front of me as we waited for 911, and things were never the same again. That’s why I didn’t want to join, and that’s why I work so hard to be a doctor. Not to get out of here or leave the Serpents as you think, but so one day I can be the Serpents’ Doctor and I can save all of you the way the doctors should have saved my mom”.
Y/N had never said all of that out loud, and she had never told anyone about her mom, or that she was there. She was shocked at her own honesty, but it had felt right, and she felt like a weight that she didn’t even know she had been carrying had just been lifted off of her. Sweet Pea squeezed her hand hard, as he was now crying just as much as her.
“I had heard that story, I just didn’t know it was yours. I am so sorry Y/N, I had no idea.”
“You have nothing to be sorry about. I had no idea about you either. I completely understand what went through your head earlier Sweets, I swear I do. But…”
“I was a jerk, there’s no way around that. No sad story could justify being that mean to you, but it’s like I told you. I like you, and I got scared. I’m not really that good at dealing with my feelings” – he said, finally looking at her again, as both their tears seemed to be drying out
“You don’t say!” – she giggled, making him laugh. As he watched the way her eyes lit up when she laughed and the light from the window shine on her face, he was sure that she was the absolute most beautiful creature he had ever laid his eyes on.
Suddenly, Y/N realised that Sweet Pea had basically just said he liker her, and she couldn’t help but to wonder what he might have meant with those words. She got up in a heartbeat, suddenly nervous at the whole situation. They had had so little time together, but all of it had been so intense and meaningful, and there was nothing she could do about the way she realised she felt about him.
“Hey, are you okay?” – he sweetly called upon her, frowning as she paced back and forth in his living room. Y/N stood still when she heard his voice, turning away from him and facing the rest of his trailer.
“Yah” – she mumbled shakily.
She could hear him getting up from the couch and walking towards her, his feet dragging through the carpeted floor, as he stood behind her. He slowly placed his arms on her shoulders, and once again Y/N found herself leaning into him, but once she realised how close their bodies were she quickly turned around, only to find out that this had made things even worse, since now her face was so close to his she could practically feel the heat radiating from his body.
“Sweets?” – she mumbled, and he broke his gaze that had been fixated on her lips to stare into her eyes instead.
“Yeah, Y/N?” – he whispered back, his hands slowly and unsurely moving to hold her waist delicately.
“Remember when I asked you why you were doing all of this for me? And you didn’t want me to ask you that, not yet anyway?” – she boldly said in a low voice, taking a step even further in his direction, and placing one of her hands on his chest, feeling his breathing as it rose and fell.
“Yes… Are you asking me again?” – he returned her bravery with shiny eyes and a reassuring smile.
“I was kind of hoping I already knew the answer” – she said, getting on her tiptoes and leaning her face towards his, stopping just mere millimetres away from his mouth so that he could have the final decision. All he had to do was lean into her, lean into the only person who had ever made his body feel so electrified in a safe way, the only one who pulled him into her atmosphere life a magnet. The only person he had ever told his story and his deepest sorrows to. He could have her, feel her lips on his, all it took was one second. One second, one small move, and things would never be the same.

Part 10
*Two Days After, Monday Morning*
Y/N woke up to the frantic ringtone of her backup alarm, which could only mean that she had slept through her two regular ones and was very close to being late to school. Pushing the sleep out of her eyes, she forced herself to get up and dragged herself into the shower, struggling to get ready as quickly as possible. As soon as she reached the kitchen she found it weird how her dad was no where to be seen, but she carried on making breakfast (toasted bagels with butter), until she heard loud voices outside and what seemed to be a small altercation between two people. Peeking through the curtains curiously, she almost dropped her bagel at what she saw – her dad and Sweet Pea stood in her front lawn, staring at each other’s eyes in an indecipherable expression. Sweet Pea’s motorcycle was behind them, still on and trembling, rumbling quietly. She watched as her dad placed his hand tightly on the boys’ shoulder, whispering so close to his face that it almost looked like something else. Rolling her eyes at the whole scene, Y/N finally decided to intervene.
“Hey dad, Sweet Pea” – she half screamed from the doorway after she picked up her backpack from the couch, startling both men in front of her, that stared at her as two kids caught doing something they shouldn’t – “What’s going on?”
“Good morning, sweetie. I hadn’t realised you were up already. There’s nothing going on” – her dad stated – “Right, Sweet Pea?” – he slapped the boys’ back heavily, making him cough.
“Yes, sir. Everything’s fine, Y/N” – he said, but his face claimed that he wasn’t being truthful, and the way he rolled his eyes at her just confirmed it.
“Hum… Sure. Are you taking me to school, Sweets?”
“No, he’s not. What did I always tell you about motorcycles, Y/N? You’re not allowed to ride them, you know that, and I frankly can’t believe that you would ever disrespect your mother’s memory like that.”
“Dad… That’s not fair and you know it. I’ll always love mom and I hate the memory of that day just as much as you do. But that’s no reason for me not to live my life, and I know she wouldn’t want that for me or you. Sweets is super careful when I’m on his bike, nothing will happen to any of us” – She walked up to her dad, hugging him and whispering in his ear “I’ll always be your little girl, but you have to let me grow up sometime, alright’”
Her dad sighed and nodded, holding on tight to her. Y/N saw Sweet Pea’s lip trembling as he stole a glance at her, and she frowned at the tall boy, anxious to find out what was on his mind.
“If you let anything happen to her I’ll kill you, you hear me ?” – her dad said, turning to Sweet Pea.
“Dad come on… Dial down the dramatic threats, will you?”
“Don’t worry, sir. If I ever let something happen to her I’ll kill myself before you have a chance to do it”
“Oh dear god, you two are one and the same, it’s ridiculous. Come on Sweets, we have to go, or we’ll be late. I’ll see you later dad” – Y/N kissed his cheek and stole the helmet from Sweet Pea’s hands, climbing onto the back of his bike. He extended his hand to her dad to shake and climbed in the motorcycle in front of her. Not even before he could push the bike forward he blushed as her arms immediately wrapped around his torso tightly.
The ride to school was uneventful, but even if it had been exciting Y/N wouldn’t have taken notice of it – she was too busy worrying about what would happen once they got to school, She hadn’t been with Sweet Pea since everything had gone down on Saturdays’ early hours, and even though they had exchanged a few texts and none of them seemed to regret any of what was said and done, she couldn’t be sure of how he would act. But just like that his bike was parked in front of the beat-up gates of Southside High and Sweet Pea was jumping out of the bike.
Reaching to remove her helmet from her head, he let his knee press against her leg and once the helmet was off, his hands were quick to find and stroke her cheeks.
“Hey, you” – he whispered, his loving tone filled with kindness and infatuation.
“Hey” – she smiled at him, running her fingers through his hair. “Are you alright? I’m sorry about my dad.”
“That’s okay, I get him. You’re everything to him, Y/N, this can’t be easy on him. But I was speaking the truth, I’ll always make sure nothing bad ever happens to you ever again, even if it kills me”.
“Weeeell…” – she joked, climbing out of the bike and lacing her arms over his shoulders – “if it does kill you I’ll be there to patch you up”
He laughed, pulling her to walk alongside him, his arm comfortably draped over her shoulders as her own arm came to rest in the curve of his torso.
“Very funny, Y/N. Now come on, this place might be hell but I think your dad will hate only one thing more than motorcycles, and that’s if you start being late for school.”
“Heeeeey waaaaaaaaaait” – she pouted, and he stopped to look at her questioningly – “Where’s my kiss?”

Part 4
The sun woke Y/N way too early, shining through the living room windows and hitting her directly in the eyes. She moved slowly, felting her muscles tensing up from the awkward position she had slept in all night long. Before she could remember why she was on the couch, she felt Sweet Pea’s arm moving around her and jumped up, slightly startled. As she looked down at the beautiful boy asleep on her couch, his hair messy on top of his head, lips slightly parted as he inhaled and exhaled slowly, she couldn’t help but to feel a sense of total gratitude wash over her. He had been there for her like no one else before, and she had no idea how she would even start to make it up to him.
Trying hard not to disturb him, she got up, throwing a blanket on top of the giant sleeping in her couch, and tip toed to the kitchen, where she started to prepare breakfast for the both of them. Her dad had not called or texted all night long, but since Sweet Pea’s phone had also been quiet she assumed no disaster had taken place. At least she hoped so. Right when the delicious smell of the toasted bread filled the house, Sweet Pea woke up. After stretching and checking his phone as well, he walked after the smell into the kitchen, leaning into the doorframe as he observed her busy figure, half hopping around the kitchen in excitement.
“Good Morning” – he loudly said with a raspy voice, making her jump up.
“Did I wake you up?”
“Actually, I think the food did. I realise now that I’m very much hungry” – He laughed, making her laugh along. – “Any news from your dad?”
“Nothing. I was hoping one of your friends had told you something, I’m really worried about him” – she frowned, and he couldn’t help the chuckle that left his lips from how adorable she looked.
“Fangs texted me yesterday telling me about the mission, I told him who the guys were and asked him to go particularly hard on them, but I haven’t heard from him since.”
“Should we be worried?” – she wondered, picking up the two plates of food while motioning for him to carry their glasses and the fresh orange juice she had prepared.
“Not yet.” – he assured her, eyeing the food hungrily, sitting down and immediately digging in. As he destroyed the food his eyes were shining, and it was her time to chuckle – “This is the best breakfast I have ever eaten!”
“It’s the least I could do. I have no words for what you did for me yesterday, Sweets, I…”
“Sweets?”
“Oh” – she blushed, suddenly realising the nickname her brain had selected for him without asking for her permission – “I’m sorry, I…”
“No. Don’t be. I like it” – he assured her, smiling so big it made her smile as well. They ate the remaining of their meals in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Y/N was trying to fight the sadness over the though of everything going back to normal now that Sweet Pea’s mission was over – he was still a Serpent, and she still wasn’t. Something similar was going through the boys’ mind, as he struggled trying to come up with reasons for her not to be a part of them other than shame or hate, his only clue being how much her dad respected and even seemed to agree with her decision.
They weren’t even done eating when a phone rang loudly, making them both jump to their feet. Sweet Pea removed his phone from his pocket, quickly bringing it to his ear.
“Hey Fangs, how……. Oh. Hum, yeah. Got it. I’ll be there in 15.” – the call was over as soon as it started.
“What is it? What’s going on?”
“Serpents’ business” – he simply said, putting his jacket on and looking around the room for his keys.
“What does that mean? Is it about my dad? Sweet Pea, please, I need to know he’s okay” – she followed him around the room like a lost puppy, despair taking over her because of the lack of news.
“Y/N, I don’t know. I’m sorry, I have to go.”
“Promise me. Promise me you don’t know and it isn’t about him”
“Please… Just let me go, let me deal with this, everything will be okay. Just let me go” – he pleaded with her as she grabbed onto his jacket.
“He’s in trouble, isn’t he? And Fangs… Fangs called you to go save him, didn’t he?” – she demanded to know, staring so intensely into his eyes he felt like she was looking into his soul.
“Y/N…”
“Answer me. Please. You’re not going anywhere until you tell me the truth.”
“The Ghoulies anticipated that we would go after them, and they were expecting us. Not enough Serpents went in compared to what they had waiting for us. They let everyone go but your dad, and they’re demanding me to go there because I’m the one who beat up their kids. They’ll let him go once I get there, so please, let me go.” – he explained in a sped-up whisper, lowering his head to the level of hers so she understood how important this was.
“Wait, no… What about you? Who’s going to save you?” – she begged in hysteria as he opened the door to her house. He turned around to look at her, only to find the same worried pout and frown she had shown earlier when asking about her father. He walked to her and hug her tight, whispering in her ear “I’ll be okay. I promise you, everything will be okay. I’ll be back as soon as possible, stay inside and lock the doors.”
He took a step back and placed his hands on her shoulders as a few tears filled her eyes up and used his calloused thumb to wipe them away. He caressed her cheek and shot her a reassuring yet cautious smile before turning away and running to his bike, speeding away as fast as humanly possible, only turning back to make sure she had gone inside and was safe. There was no fear for himself in Sweet Pea’s mind, only sense of duty and worry for his mentor and leader. But as he drove he realized that, for the first time, on the back of his mind, someone was giving him a reason to get out of this mission alive.

Y/N Point of view
“You’ve never been on one?” – he kindly mocked, smirking at her – “I’d assume your father…”
“I have.” – she bluntly stated, adverting his gaze. He furrowed his brows in confusing, sensing a greater mystery than just a plain old phobia.
“So what’s the problem?”
“I’m just not a huge fan.” – Sweet Pea couldn’t help to notice how short her answers were becoming in comparison to every other moment in their conversation so far.
“Did you get into a huge accident or something like that?” – he wondered, tilting his head down to attempt to look her in the eyes, since she was clearly avoiding his gaze.
“Something like that… Look, I don’t feel like talking about it, alright?” – she begged, already becoming impatient. Even though he had rescued her and was being quite kind to her, she still didn’t trust him enough to tell him her deepest secret and darkest sorrow.
“Alright, I’ll stop asking. But how do you want to do this? I don’t even own a car, and I’m definitely not letting you walk anywhere like that”
The situation was far from ideal, and she couldn’t believe she was even considering the chance of getting on that bike with him. But she did have to admit that he was right, that seemed to be their only option if they were ever to make it home before her dad. Y/N closed her eyes strongly, fighting to keep her breathing steady and normal.
“Please… Pea, please don’t let me get hurt. Please” – she begged, without opening her eyes.
“Hey… I saved you one time today and I can do it again. You won’t get hurt ever again, not while I’m around, alright? I promise.” – he stated, as serious as he had ever been, taking a step in her direction and holding on to her arm softly. She opened her eyes slowly and nodded, and they started walking towards his bike.
“I have to admit that I am a little weirded out that you got to my house without needing any directions” – Y/N laughed as they walked into her modest house, just like every house in the southside was.
“You do know I’ve been here before, right? I’m the young leader, Y/N, I come to meetings all the time” – he smirked, walking straight to the kitchen the second they had stepped foot in the house.
Y/N rolled her eyes at him, following him to her fridge, still limping a bit, as he fetched a cold-water bottle for both. They moved over to the bathroom, where he helped her clean herself up, take care of the more visible and open wounds and patch her up. They went through the entire process in silence, other than the occasional “autch” and “sorry”, both lost in thought over how atypical their day had turned out to be. After they were done, Y/N kicked him out, so she could have a shower, and as she stepped under the hot water, finally feeling the extent of all her injuries, she could hear him pacing back and forth in the living room. She knew he was fighting everything inside him that told him to go after the Ghoulies and hurt them beyond repair, and the fact that he was renouncing that so he could take care of her made her feel warm inside. For the first time in forever, she didn’t feel lonely – she felt safe.
As she finished putting on some leggings and a sweater, she heard the from door open and her dad’s footsteps crossing the entrance, and then Sweet Pea’s footsteps as he hurried to meet him and tell him what had happened. She quickly threw on a pair of socks and hurried to the living room as fast as she could manage, facing her dad’s furious/concerned look as soon as she walked in.
“Oh my sweet sweet baby” – her dad cried, walking to her and pushing her into a tight hug – “what have they done to you… how dare them!” – he hissed, examining the bruises on her face.
“It’s okay dad, I’m alright now. Sweet Pea took care of it and scared them off, I’m sure they’ll stay away from me now”
“Oh, I know they will” – he darkly exclaimed, already reaching for his phone and searching for FP’s contact – “We’re going after them”
“I want in” – Sweet Pea said, staring directly in her eyes. She pleaded with him through head movements and intense stares that he wouldn’t, but Y/N knew there was no talking him out of it. His mind had been set from the second he had found them hitting her.
“No” – her dad said, to everyone’s disbelief, especially Sweet Pea’s.
“But I was the one who found them! I know who they are, and I want to finish what I started. Please, sir, I know she’s your daughter and you want revenge, so do I, please let me go”
“I need you to stay with her” – the older man said, while pocketing quite a few varied sized knifes, as Y/N shook her head at the two of them – “I can’t leave her alone in a night like this, and you have proved yourself trust worthy and capable of protecting her. You won’t leave her side until this is dealt with. That’s your assignment tonight. Do you understand me, boy?”
“Dad, I don’t like this. They’re just kids, why the hell are you taking so many weapons with you and turning this into something bigger than it has to – “
“Be quiet, child. I respect your decisions and support you through everything, you know that. But this is Serpent’s business. They hurt my kid, and they’re going to pay for it. You’re going to stay here and be good until I get back, and that’s the end of it. Now, boy, did you understand your task?”
“Yes, sir. I promise you I’ll keep her safe. If anyone tries to touch your daughter ever again they won’t walk away from me alive”
“Oh my god” – Y/N half screamed, rolling her eyes – “You two are such alpha males, it’s ridiculous. Alright dad, I’ll do as I’m told. Please don’t kill anyone or get yourself in prison tonight, alright? And come home in one piece. Please” – she urged, as he kissed her forehead and walked to the door, shaking Sweet Pea’s hand before he left.
“I love you kiddo. Be safe” – and he was gone.
Y/N walked to the couch and sat down, worried and angry and scared and overall confused. The tall boy with the mission to protect her sat next to her, and he slowly moved his hand to rest on her knew, reassuringly.
“Your dad will be fine, he knows what he’s doing” – he said, but she didn’t react to his words.
As everything had happened on that day caught up to her, from the ghoulies to Sweet Pea’s help and accusations, the motorcycle and then her dad basically marching into civil war, she couldn’t keep it in anymore. Bending down so her head rested on her knees, she started sobbing desperately, shaking with every painful breath and sob.
At first, Sweet Pea couldn’t do anything but stare at her frowning in worry and pity. He wasn’t used to people crying around him. The last girl that had cried next to him was Toni after some northside girl had broken her heart in 9th grade, and he helped her out of it through mockery. He didn’t think mockery was going to help Y/N feel any better at that time, though.
And so, against all his instincts and everything that defined him, he leaned forward to take her in his arms, pushing her to his lap as he rocked her back and forth, stroking her hair softly while whispering that everything was going to be okay. They stayed like that for so long he lost track of time, until eventually she was exhausted from crying and from the day and fell asleep in his lap, her head lazily thrown across his shoulders. And even though his arms were aching from holding her for so long, he didn’t move, protecting her all throughout the night even from her own thoughts.

Y/N adjusted to Riverdale quite easily. She was nice enough to everyone, and even though most of her time was spent by Roni’s side, she managed to become close with a lot of other students, even some that weren’t Veronica’s friends but shared Y/N’s classes. She had taken quite well to the Southsiders, spending many lunches at their table. The only person that seemed to resist the breath of fresh air that the new girl had bought to the tired town was Reggie, that seemed to distance himself from everyone around him more and more every day.
Y/N hadn’t tried too hard to cosy up to the Mantle boy – she wasn’t one to push people when they clearly didn’t want to be pushed, and even though she was new to Riverdale it was clear to her that he had gone through some pretty tough things. So she went about her life, smiling at him every time she saw him and receiving a blank stare from his part, just the same as everyone else. Their first real conversation only happened a month after Y/N’s arrival.
Not being the cheerleading type, Y/N had decided not to join the Vixens, no matter how much Roni, Betty and Cheryl insisted on her to do so. She did, however, really like volleyball, and used to play for her school in New York. So once try-outs rolled around, it only took her a second to decide to go for it. And that’s why she ended up in the school gym after classes were over, practicing and freshening up on the moves.
After changing into her workout clothes, she made her way to the gym, only to be graced with the sight of a very shirtless and very sweaty Reggie Mantle throwing a ball at the basket in one end of the gym. She made her way to him calmly, volleyball under her arm, and cleared her throat to get his attention.
“Hum, hey. Sorry to barge in, I didn’t realise anyone would be here this late. Do you mind if I practice my services here?” – she kindly said. Reggie didn’t even flinch, nor did he bother looking at her to answer.
“Go ahead.” – was all he said.
Sighing, Y/N made her way to the other side of the gym with the intention of installing the net – a task that turned out not to be so simple. The chords that allowed the net to descend from the ceiling were fairly heavy, and even though the girl was quite athletic, her full body strength didn’t seem to be enough to pull them down. After a good 15 minutes of struggling, she cursed in despair, ready to give up.
“You’re not supposed to pull on those. There’s a button on the wall.” – she heard an amused voice behind her, and turned bright red as she saw Reggie smiling for the first time since they had met – “No one would be able to pull that down”
He walked to the wall, pushing a red button, and causing the net to descend immediately, leaving Y/N in a very embarrassed blushed state. Reggie grabbed one of the volleyballs from the basket and threw it at her, immediately running back to the other half of the court. After practicing a few services, Y/N grew tired of playing alone.
“Hey, Reggie” – she shouted, getting his attention, his head slowly turning in her direction as the basketball fell lonely on the floor – “Would you mind playing with me ? It’s feeling a bit pointless to do this alone and I don’t have long until try outs left”
For what felt like 10 minutes he didn’t say anything back, just staring blankly into her eyes. She couldn’t tell if he was trying to decide what his next move would be or simply ignoring her, but waited patiently for an answer nonetheless.
“You’re trying out for the volleyball girls’ team?” – he asked her, starting to walk in her direction. Taking the move for a yes, Y/N walked to the other side of the net.
“Yeah, I used to play back home and I kind of miss it a lot. Don’t really know who I am without playing it several times a week”
“I get it. That’s how basketball used to feel like for me” – he quietly commented,
“Used to?” – she wondered, throwing the ball over the net, Reggie easily passing it back to her.
“Right now I don’t really know who I am even when I play basketball”
“Then why do you still do it?” – she asked, barely over a whisper, and for a moment she thought Reggie hadn’t even hear her.
“Can we just play and not talk about anything? Please.” – he begged her with intense eyes. Y/N answered with a nod, serving the ball to him with force. After playing for a really long time, the girl was quite happy with the progress they had made – Reggie was doing really well, testing her skills on a whole new level. Eventually they felt too tired to keep going and just sat on the floor, breathing heavily.
“Look Reggie… I know what Hiram did to you was all kinds of shitty but…”
“Don’t. This was fun, I’ll see you tomorrow” – he rapidly said, walking out so fast Y/N couldn’t even say goodbye.

Part 3
Y/N would be lying if she said she hadn’t become intrigued with Reggie after their encounter in the gym. Following that evening, she had tried to start a conversation with him several times, but he always ignored or avoided her advances. Eventually, she grew tired of being pushed away and gave up on him entirely, moving on with her regular new life in Riverdale.
It didn’t come as a surprise to anyone that she made it into the volleyball team easily and quickly became one of the top players, crucial for every single win. Her friends had started to attend the games to support her – even if they barely made an effort to understand the game they were always cheering for her, and Ronnie and Cheryl had even made t-shirts. From time to time, Y/N noticed Reggie’s timid figure in the back of the bleachers during a game, and that always led her to push herself harder. Even if he didn’t talk to her, the smirk plastered on his face every time she scored a skilled point made her happy.
One day, while getting ready in the balneary after a volleyball practice, Y/N took longer than usual. Her parents had been fighting all week and she was in no rush to get home and listen to them go at each other over every little meaningless thing. Once she finally left the closed space, the boys’ basketball team’s practice was right at its intensity peak and didn’t seem to be going too well. Besides being an extremely curious person, she was also a huge basketball fan, and couldn’t not peak into the gym to see what all the fuss was about. After observing the practice for a while, she was scrunching her nose up at the formation the team was playing in – she thought Sweet Pea and Reggie should switch positions and didn’t understand how that wasn’t obvious for anyone other than her.
She slowly crept into the gym and sat down at the bleachers behind the coach, not being able to keep only observing from a distance. Several players in the team noticed her and waved, but as per usual Reggie ignored her. Eventually, she couldn’t keep quiet anymore and moved to sit by the coach.
“Hum, Mr.Lambs. I’m sorry if this out of line, but could I ask you something about the team?”
“Of course Y/N, I’m all ears. But I hope you’re not thinking of switching over to basketball, I don’t see how Miss Jackson would handle that” – he joked, referring to the volleyball’s team coach, who also happened to be his girlfriend.
“No, not at all. I just really enjoy watching, and I was wondering if you’ve ever thought of switching Sweet Pea with Reggie? It’s just that with the way they’re playing right now it seems like they’re clashing a lot, it isn’t very fluid and cooperative, and it’s almost predictable. I feel like it could really improve the flow of the whole team” – she bravely said, not taking her eyes from the court once. As soon as she was done talking, and almost as if they had heard her, Pea and Reggie crashed in the court, the ball flying out of their hands in the general direction of where Y/N was sitting. Mr.Lambs seemed to consider hey suggestion for a while, before eventually calling the whole team over.
“Listen up, team. Miss Y/L/N seems to think that we would benefit from switching up Mantle’s and Pea’s positions, and frankly from what I have seen today I am tempted to agree. So we’re going to try and test that for the remaining of today’s practice. Understood?”
“Are you serious?” – Reggie insurged himself, staring coldly into Y/N eyes’ – “We’re changing the way we’ve always done things because some girl said something? I bet she doesn’t even know what the hell she’s talking about ! – he raised his voice, causing Y/N to pout. She knew Reggie was distant, but she didn’t pin him for an asshole. At least not until now.
“Dude, chill out, yeah ? Don’t talk about her like that” – Fangs defended his friend, as Sweet Pea and several other guys on the team also eyed Reggie furiously.
“Whatever” – was Reggie’s answer.
“Look, I was just saying. No need to be a jerk about it, but if you’re so quick to attacking me let me tell you that the way you’ve been doing things clearly isn’t working since you haven’t been winning any games. I was just trying to help. Besides, I really don’t see what being a girl has anything to do with it, but I don’t even care anymore. Good luck, I’m out of here”
And with that she walked out of the gym, not giving anyone the pleasure of watching her become upset over a stupid boy.

Y/N Point of view
“Can you get up?” – he asked her, clearly torn between worry and anger. Sweet Pea only wished someone else was there with them to take care of her so he could run off and finish the guys that had dared do this to her.
“I think so” – she mumbled, weak and dizzy. He helped her up, supporting most of her weight with his own and carried her to the chair she had been sitting in before hell fell upon her, so he could observe the extent of her injuries. Her lip was clearly busted in more than one place, still bleeding, and several small bruises were already starting to show on her face and arms, and she was pressing into her stomach in agony. He didn’t think anything was broken, but that didn’t rule out internal injuries that he knew nothing about. She was the future doctor, not him.
“I think I should take you to your dad, so he can…”
“No.” – she firmly said, lifting her head to face him, some of her strength and determination finally coming back into her eyes.
“Y/N, I…”
“No. He will lose it if he seems me like this. He’ll start a freaking war with them.”
“Maybe he should!” – he screamed, anger finally taking over him, as he kicked a chair that was right next to them – “They can’t get away with this!”
“They’re kids, they are not responsible for their whole gang, and the whole gang shouldn’t have to pay for their actions.” – Y/N stated, and she said it in such an authoritarian and final way that he realised he couldn’t question it. However, her words did piss him off slightly.
“You hate the serpents so much that you won’t join but you’re defending the ghoulies? I can only imagine how terribly sad your dad would be if he heard you” – he proclaimed with disgust. Her face twitched, his words hurting more than he ever thought they would, and as he saw the pain in her eyes he regretted ever saying them.
She shook her head at him, closing her lips firmly. She got up slowly, using the table for support, as she quietly whimpered in pain. He made a move towards her, but she stopped him with her hand, as she slowly limped to the door. He followed her slowly, watching her every move, waiting for the moment she’d fall, and he’d have to catch her. But that moment didn’t come.
They slowly made their way across the school hallway, in total silence. Since everyone was either in class or outside, no one saw them walking, and Y/N was very thankful for that. Sweet Pea walked next to her in silence, lost in thought. He knew he had gone too far by mentioning her dad, but other than that he could not understand why she was so upset – she wasn’t a Serpent, she didn’t even talk to them, that could only mean she was ashamed. Right?
Once they got outside, they had to face the stairs. Y/N walked fiercely in the direction of them, stumbling as soon as she tried to take a step, and Sweet Pea grabbed her arm immediately, half carrying her through the staircase.
“Let me take you home.”
“No” – she said, already turning towards the street that led to her house.
“Come on. You can’t go by yourself. I know you walk to school, I notice you. Just because you don’t notice me or care about the Serpents it doesn’t mean….”
“Shut up. You don’t know anything about me, alright? Stop assuming I don’t like the Serpents, stop pretending you have ever cared enough to ask me what I thought about you or why I am not a Serpent. You have no right to tell me my dad would be sad with me because you just don’t know, okay? So, shut up” – she snapped. Her aggression wasn’t like the feeling most southside habitants displayed – it was out of frustration, pain, fear and, above all, insecurity. She held Sweet Pea’s gaze as he regretted everything he had thought of her and said to her for he had just realised she was right – he had just assumed, and he had never cared to ask.
“You’re right. I’m sorry. I should have asked, I want to ask”
“But I don’t want to answer. Not now, anyway. I think you lost that right when you assumed what you did. And for the record, what you said about my dad hurt me more than anything those ghoulies did to me ever could”
Her words cut right through him as deep and profound regret washed over him. He couldn’t bare to look at her anymore, letting his eyes fall to the ground. Silence installed between them, and for a few minutes that felt like hours none of them spoke, lost in their own thoughts. Finally, Y/N broke the silence.
“But I’ll get over it. You saved my life, so I owe you one, and I’m going to pay you back by pretending you never said any of that. Deal?” – she suggested, back to her fragile and kind voice, urging him to look back at her.
“Deal. Can I take you home now? Please”
“Yah… We should hurry, dad will be home in an hour and I should clean up before he sees me, or World War II Southside version will start quicker than Fangs falls for a new girl” – she joked, receiving a deep laugh in return from the tall boy in front of her, just as she had planned. They smiled at each other, finally ready to move on from the small confrontation that had taken place.
“Your requests are my orders” – he replied “My bike’s over there”
“Oh” – she exclaimed, suddenly going pale – “Of course you drive a bike…” – she whispered, suddenly afraid for the first time since he had found her. He stared at her questioningly and she stared back, wondering if she had any chance other than sharing her biggest secret with this mysterious and all-to-new in her life Serpent boy.
I am more optimistic, both about reading and about books. There will always be non-readers, bad readers, lazy readers – there always were. Reading is a majority skill but a minority art. Yet nothing can replace the exact, complicated, subtle communion between absent author and entranced, present reader.

Y/N Point of view
Part 8
The day at school was going by faster than Y/N had predicted, and she had made it to her last class with no disaster to report. Besides the awkwardness of having to endure the teachers’ questioning stares due to her bruised face and proximity with Sweet Pea and other serpents, everything else felt normal, and Y/N was happy and unpreoccupied for the entire time. As the end of her last class arrived, one she did not share with Sweet Pea, she quickly got up and walked through the hallway, anxious to go home and get back into her homework and motivational letters for college, something she had been slacking off over the last few days.
Once she reached the door of Southside High, she noticed a few Ghoulie members sitting on the stairs, including some of the ones that had beat her up. However, since there were quite a few Serpents around, she decided to keep her head up and walk through them.
“Wasn’t sure I’d see you around today, or ever again.” – one of the ghoulies said, rising to his feet. – “After every Serpent including your dad and boyfriend got their ass kicked because of you, one would think you’d have the decency to get the fuck away from this school”
“Fuck off” – Y/N responded aggressively, catching everyone by surprised as she brushed by him. Through the corner of her eye she saw Sweet Pea and Fangs at the top of the stairs, eyeing the Ghoulies with fire in their eyes. She could feel them wanting to start a fight and knowing she couldn’t handle any more drama over male egos, decided to stop it before it started. Skipping back up the stairs until she stood in front of them, she pulled Pea by the sleeve until his ear was at the level of her mouth:
“Can you take me home please? I don’t feel like walking, and being here is giving me too much anxiety. I know you want to punch them but I’d really like to go now, if that’s okay” – she begged in the sweetest voice she could manage. He shut his eyes, trying to focus and made a quick decision. Y/N knew his Serpent nature was telling him to start a fight and defend her honour, but she hoped that the part of him that wanted to stand by her side would be stronger than that instinct. After a few silent seconds of introspection, Pea finally let out a long sigh. He placed his hand on her lower back and guided her down the stairs, shooting death glares at the members of the rival gang.
“What the hell man? Are we not going to jump them?” – Fangs wondered in a heated voice as they reached their bikes.
“No, they ain’t worth it. Y/N wants to go home, so we’re just going to let it go. For now, at least” – Y/N rolled her eyes at that, but let it slide. Even if she had to prevent a future conflict, she was satisfied with having avoided this one.
“Sorry, Fangs. Have you considered boxing? There’s less blood and clean up involved!” – Y/N joked, and was relieved to see Fangs relaxing and laughing along with her.
“Alright, alright, I get it. Go on then, have fun. I’ll save my strength for the next time those fuckers are rude to you. Bye guys!” – and he walked away, waving them off. When Y/N stopped laughing at him and focused back on Sweet Pea, she found him staring at her with an enigmatic expression.
“What? Is there something in my face?” – She laughed at him, lightly punching his arm.
“No. I was just thinking about how no one had ever been able to pull me away from a fight before, and you did it so easily.”
“Oh! What an honour!” – Y/N laughed nervously.
“I’m serious, Y/N. I don’t’ get it, four days ago we had never even talked and now…” – he mumbled, looking down at her.
“And now what?” – she half whispered, leaning on his bike and avoiding his burning gaze.
“And now I feel like I never want to not talk to you again” – he admitted – “Which is fucking terrifying. I don’t do this shit, Y/N! – his voice started to rise as he took a few steps away from her, and she stared back in confusion – “I don’t let people in, not like this. Not after every shitty thing I’ve been through. You can’t do this to me!”
“What? What did I do?” – she cried out, her eyes filling up with water as she struggled not to blink so the tears wouldn’t fall down her cheeks.
“I’m sorry, I can’t take you home. I’ll see you tomorrow.” – he brushed her away from the bike and put his helmet on, avoiding her gaze and ignoring her words of protest as he climbed on to the bike and drove away, leaving a trail of noise and fumes behind.
Absolutely lost on what had just happened, but still furious that he had treated her like that out of nowhere, Y/N started her walk home in rushed steps, struggling to avoid her sobs from becoming to noticeable. As soon as she got home, she ran to her room and locked the door, finally letting go of everything that she had bottled up since the confrontation.
